You’re looking for a program that will teach you everything you need to know to become a makeup artist, from beauty to stunning special effects techniques. You want hands-on training with real experts, in small classes that ensure you get the attention and direct instruction you need to succeed. You expect to walk away with a Certificate that carries real weight in the industry, and a diverse portfolio that will help you get your foot in the door.
Unlike other schools, the intensive 10-week Advanced Makeup Artist Program at AMUA in Nashville is structured to prepare you for the challenges you’ll face on the job. Our award-winning instructors know what it takes to make it as a makeup artist. Under their guidance, you’ll work with photographers, live models and actors to develop the everyday confidence and skills that are the mark of a professional.
Graduates of the Advanced Makeup Artist Program go on to launch careers in:

Beauty Basics – 4 Weeks
Learn the fundamentals of the makeup artist’s trade: Beauty and corrective makeup, makeup trends from 1900’s to today, sanitization and hygiene, color theory, and airbrushing
Photographic Hair Styling – 1 week
Take a tour of the past century in hair styling: You’ll master classic styles of yesterday and today, and discover how to make them your own.
Lighting & Photography – 1 week
Get ready for your close-ups: Learn good set etiquette from industry professionals as you explore color theory for different lighting styles. Participate in two days of photoshoots with a pro photographer. You’ll add six different looks to your portfolio.
Business Development – 1 week
Make it as a makeup artist: Key lessons in the business side of freelancing, including contracts, taxes, networking and finding work, building websites and marketing on social media.
TV/Film Character Makeup – 3 weeks
Your imagination comes to life: Discover the out-of-the-kit special effects techniques used by Hollywood pros, including bruising, burns, age make-up, Pros-Aide transfers, foam-latex prosthetics and more.

Kevin St James is a professional makeup artist servicing the Nashville area. Kevin’s earliest makeup experiences began in theatre school and on the stage, where he worked professionally for many years before coming to AMUA.
Kevin was recently the key makeup artist for both Spring and Fall Trends Cover Girl fashion shows at Proctor & Gamble in Cincinnati. Clients include Maria Salas CNN Latino Entertainment, Patrick Stinson Made In Hollywood and Reese Witherspoon “The Good Lie” Red Carpet Event and Film Premiere.
